Monthsary Goodness

"Rochelle, it is my commitment to you that I will live for the glory of God alone...
As a leader of our home, I will not lead by force but out of humility and Spirit of Christ...
As your husband, I will value your happiness and well-being above my own...
I am human at best but through His grace, I press on each day to be your God's Best."
Happy monthsary, Mahal ko.

Prenup Snapshots

It rained heavily during our prenup photoshoot but God is so gracious that even if we only reserved the upper garden, the owner of the museum allowed us to use the whole facility so we were also able to shoot in the lower garden.  All things work together for our good :)

Here's just some snapshots of our prenup.

"But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love." ~ 1 Corinthians 13:13

Individual Service Learning Part 2

Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored,
that was me—you did it to me – Matthew 25:40

Our Service Learning (SL) activity at GreenEarth Heritage Foundation, Inc. (GEHFI) last November 17, 2012 made me realize that there are great opportunities to serve others through the graduate school.  I had been involved in different community service for children, youth, and young adults, locally and internationally, but my GEHFI experience is a remarkable event because it is my first community participation with farmers and their children who live in foothills of the mountains.  I can clearly see the purpose of having the influence (and position) to make an impact in the lives of people, in the community, and eventually in the country.

The original plan was to do our SL activity on October 26 but due to the inclement weather condition we moved it to November 17, 2012.

Mountain Adventure Experience

The GEHFI is located in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains, in San Miguel Bulacan.  It took us three hours to reach Brgy. Sibul, where the community farmers of GEHFI lives.   The land is separated from the nearest township by a river and the children have to walk across this river by foot daily onto bumpy, rough and unpaved roads to attend the nearest elementary school.  Our group, composed of four men and five women, has to cross the river to do our mission for that day.  We travelled so far and it was an adventurous experience for all of us since we just relied on the map for directions.  We thank God for His travelling mercy that we are able to reach our destination safely.  The weather was good and the level of the river was below knee level, which means the vehicles can cross it.  Thanks to Mico and Raymond, our classmates, for volunteering to be the drivers and for offering their vehicles to us.  It was fun travelling on the way up to the mountain.

As we reached the place for our SL activity, I can imagine how hard it is for the farmers to transport their harvest to the market since there is no farm-to-market road to assist them with their produce. I learned that even in their most productive months, they have extreme difficulty taking their harvest to town due to lack of infrastructure.  GEHFI has requested the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Bulacan to build a bridge in the said place.  What I can do to help them is to make my friends aware of the plight of the people in Brgy. Sibul through social media networking.  It may reach the attention of the government or concerned citizens and/or organizations to sponsor the building of bridge.
Transforming Land

Our first activity was tree planting.  Ms. Aileen De Ocampo, UPLB agronomist serving as GreenEarth's farm manager and site administrator, helped us in our SL activity.  She asked the high school students to assist us in the said activity.  We introduced ourselves and we had time to know them all by names (though it’s hard to memorize their names).  Each volunteer has two partners to assist in the tree planting activity.  We, the volunteers, thought that we’ll just plant in the nearby plantation but Ms, Aileen told us that we have to walk up to the mountain to plant our seedlings there.  Good thing we all wear comfortable shoes for trekking. It’s a ten-to-fifteen minute walk, so each volunteer took the opportunity to get to know our partners and start the career counseling.  My partners were Renz and JP, graduating students of John J Russel Memorial High School.  I used the opportunity of knowing them by asking questions about their dreams, status in life, and challenges as a student.  I shared my experiences with them- why did I choose BS Accountancy as my course, how did I finished my studies and how I used my knowledge and skills for God’s glory.  I shared my life testimony with them that I had been one of the students who belong to the economically challenged level of society and I don’t see that as a hindrance to reach one’s goal in life.  I encouraged them to dream big because we have a big GOD, who knows the plans He has for us, plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans us hope and a future.

Teaching minds, Transforming LIVES

As a true believer in Christ, my mission is to disciple, teach, serve and love others with whole-hearted devotion and to be a transforming influence in the lives of others.  Part of our SL activity is to help GreenEarth in resolving their problem on illiteracy and idleness through conducting lessons in English, Science, Computer and Values.

Mico, Marielle and I were assigned to teach Grade 2-3 composed of sixteen students.  For science, we discussed the center of gravity through an activity of making an egg stand using salt.  They are so excited to apply what they’ve learned and so each one was given a chance to do the activity.  For values, we asked the students to memorize a verse in the bible and discussed how they can apply it.  They were asked to share their answers by drawing it in a bond paper.  I noticed that they were too shy to present their drawings in class but I’m amazed with their work.  They were so creative and they can really draw.  As teachers, we affirm each student after they talk to boost their confidence and to encourage them to talk and have conversation with others.

For the high school students, we divided the students into nine groups so each volunteer can have one-on-one discussion with the students.  We continued the career counseling and we discussed the assessment test in English proficiency that they took last month.  Dr. Matti, Founder and Executive Director of GEHFI, gave the questionnaires and the result of the exam of the students to us ahead of time.  My preparation includes reading English book, and reviewing the rules of English grammar.

Even though our SL activity was conducted only in one day, I believe that we were able to make an impact in the community.  We have planted seeds in the minds and lives of the kids and I pray that it will nourish and grow and that they too will also influence others.

Opportunity to build relationships

The group / DLSU MBA volunteers were determined in doing our mission in GEHFI as we are also geared toward a common goal: to make an impact in the lives of others.  We don’t think that we just do our SL because we are required in BUS560M but we want to make a positive change in the lives of others. And since we have a prevalent purpose, we have developed better relationships among ourselves.  I’m so grateful for the lives of my classmates and we all took the opportunity to build relationship.  It is when we work with people that we get to know who they really are. Through our SL activity, I was able to interact with my classmates in a deeper level.

I hope we can always learn to give ourselves to others and experience the joy of touching lives. My prayer is for us to use our influence in our respective companies to craft Social Responsibility activities that will contribute to the transformation of our company and country.  I’m looking forward to apply the important principles and valuable lessons we have learned [and we will learn] in the graduate school.

Individual Service Learning Part 1

Freely you have received, freely give

I initially thought of doing service learning activity at GreenEarth Heritage Foundation, Inc. (GEHFI), a non-profit Philippine organization based at the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountain in San Miguel, Bulacan.  It is a farm, a burgeoning reforestation site, a sustainable agricultural development, a haven of peace and tranquility, and a promise of a better tomorrow for members of their growing community.  The mission of GreenEarth Heritage Foundation is to preserve the environment, to adhere to sound and sustainable agricultural practices and to help in the alleviation of poverty through livelihood and community development.  Their vision is to build a model eco-farming community on their land donation, masterplanned to allow for future allocated areas for schools, parks, marketplaces, sports facilities, recreation, and community training center, for the benefit of indigent farming families who have decided to hinge their life’s hopes for a brighter future on their mission and programs.

Ms. Kathryn Anne Ore, my friend and mentor, introduced the GreenEarth Heritage Foundation to me.  She is one of the Board of Trustees and the Chief Finance Officer (CFO) at GEHFI and she referred me to Dr. Mylene Matti, the Founder and Executive Director of the said foundation.

I informed some of my classmates about the GreenEarth Heritage Foundation, Inc. (GEHFI), showed them the website and suggested to have our group service learning activity there.  My classmates are interested and we agreed to volunteer in GEHFI.

I emailed Dr. Matti three weeks ago and informed her about our intention to volunteer.  She is very accommodating.  We had a meeting with her last October 12, 2012 at Cityland Herrera Tower in Makati City.  She discussed how the foundation started and where they are today to give us a clearer picture of how important our volunteerism is.  Currently, the foundation has 150 beneficiaries composed of a whole community of farmers and their children.

GreenEarth Heritage Foundation is battling four I’s--Illegal deforestation, Insurgency, Illiteracy, Idleness.  GreenEarth's solutions are four L’s-- Love for the Environment, Livelihood in Organic Agriculture, Literacy for Children and Adults, and last but not least--Living Hope in Christ.  As volunteers are needed, the group can aid the foundation in its 4 L’s.  In Love for the Environment and Livelihood in Organic Agriculture, the group can work alongside GreenEarth’s farmers in vegetable production, making seed blocks, seeding, and transplanting young plants.  The on-site farm manager can teach us how to properly plant a tree. We will also have a short tour on the principles and practice of organic agriculture.  It will be a help for the foundation and a learning experience for the group as well.

In Literacy for Children and Adults and Living Hope in Christ, another set of members from the group can help at on-site Library and Learning Center by breaking into groups to handle small classes to conduct a specific lesson plan on English conversational didactics and computer literacy for the farm kids.  Everybody is at a different level and so the few workers of GreenEarth’s literacy team can guide us as to what we can tackle with the kids.

GreenEarth’s biggest problem is lack of manpower to do one-on-one and small group discussion.  The high school students can also benefit with career counselling for those desiring to go to college.  All of us will be dedicated to providing career talks where the group will share their experience in the right preparation needed to be successful in one’s career.  Here is where the group, being established professionals and MBA students, can truly be able to influence and create an impact to the community.

The objectives of the project is to reforest the denuded hills, rehabilitate the soil organically and make it productive with numerous types of fruit-bearing trees, vegetables, herbs and other produce that can be sold under fair trade pricing in order to break the chains of poverty afflicting our farmer beneficiaries; Empower men, women, and children to build a transform community where the teachings of the Holy Bible are upheld.

God opened opportunities for us to reach out to others and I believe that our group has tremendous potential given our skill sets to truly make a difference in the lives of our marginalized and unempowered community. We are planning to have our service learning activity on October 26, 2012.  We would like it to be a time that not only the beneficiaries will get something out of it, but all who come will be changed forever by giving of their time and skills to our community.  Freely we have received the blessings from God and freely we will give and share those blessings to others.

I realized that we are still on a process of learning things as we go on with this service learning activity.  I can imagine the endless possibilities that can be accomplished when we, as ordinary people, combine our resources and change our gifts into something that is both meaningful and extraordinary to our ministry here on earth.

Greatly blessed, highly favoured and deeply loved

This year, I have made a decision that required a step of faith and revealed my priority in life.  I have a desire to pursue Master of Business Administration (MBA) since I graduated college.  It is my dream to teach in my alma mater, Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP).  I had been one of the students who belong to the economically challenged level of society and I want to contribute to the University that gave me access to quality and responsive education.  I believe that MBA program is a great tool to further develop my knowledge and skills to eventually fulfil my desire to teach.

I thank God for teaching me to wait upon His timing and to trust in His perfect plan.  After going through the admission process in De La Salle University (DLSU), I was accepted in the MBA Program.  It was God who made things work together for my good.  I am blessed with my family for they have supported my decision to study.  I know it will be a great challenge since I am paying for my education and I’m also supporting the needs of my family.  I am encouraged by my friends, colleagues and Pastor to pursue my passion in teaching by taking the first step in having an MBA degree.  I am inspired by my boss, who is also studying MBA in a different school.  Despite of her responsibilities at home, work and school, she managed to balance her time well.

(L-R: Bianca, Seleena, Isabel, Roche and Ruth)

This is my first term and I am all the more grateful with my exemption in Advanced Technical Writing (ENG501M).  For this term, I am taking the foundational courses- Management Action Research (BUS 530M) and Lasallian Leadership with Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility (BUS 560M), every Tuesday and Thursday in RCBC Campus.  It’s been a month since we started the class.  I have identified the things that I need to improve in myself.  I have also gained new friends and was able to work with some of them in our case analysis and group reporting.  I love studying our lessons and it is my passion to learn new things and share my insights with others.  Although I need to sacrifice my time to read articles and do my homework, I always keep in mind that in everything I do- in word or deed, I do it in the name of Jesus Christ.

I am greatly blessed, highly favoured and deeply loved by God.  It will be an exciting journey but despite all these blessings, He has reminded me to be humble.
Thus says the Lord, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises loving kindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the Lord. - Jeremiah 9:23-24
